Kerala regionally referred to as Keralam, is a state in the south-west region of India on the Malabar coast. Kerala is a bizarre anomaly among developing nations, a place that offers real hope for the future of the Third World... Though mostly a land of paddy-covered plains, statistically Kerala stands out as the Mount Everest of social development. Kerala is one of India's most progressive states in terms of social welfare and quality of life. In contrast to the rest of India and most other low-income countries, Keralites' enjoy education and health at levels that are on par with the West. The State boasts of one of India's highest literacy rates, highest life expectancy and lowest child mortality rates.

Kerala is ranked the best in India, when it comes to Physical Quality of Life, which is on a par with that of the West.

Kerala holiday
Here I am going to discuss specialties of Kerala

HOUSEBOATS

Have you ever gone cruising in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven't, make sure you do. This one is really a wonderful and unforgettable experience!

Present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact reworked version of kettuvallams of olden times. The original kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices. A standard kettuvallam can hold up to 30 tons from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float! Now, wouldn't that be something?

BACKWATERS

The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state in southern India. The network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both manmade and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of Kerala state. The backwaters were formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range.

AYURVEDA

Sprouted in the pristine land of India some 5000 years ago, Ayurveda, the science of life and longevity, is the oldest healthcare system in the world and it combines the profound thoughts of medicine and philosophy. Since then Ayurveda has stood for the wholesome physical, mental and spiritual growth of humanity around the world. Today, it's a unique, indispensable branch of medicine, a complete naturalistic system that depends on the diagnosis of your body's humours - vata, pitta and kapha - to achieve the right balance.

Kerala possesses an unbroken tradition of Ayurveda that has surpassed the many invasions and intrusions both foreign and native. For hundreds of years the Ayurveda Vaidyas (traditional practitioners of Ayurveda) were almost the only access for people seeking healing from every kind of disease in Kerala. The legendary eight families of Vaidyas (Ashta vaidyas) and their successors treated the entire state for centuries. Unlike the other Indian states the status of Ayurveda in Kerala is not alternative but mainstream. In fact, today, Kerala is the only State in India which practices this system of medicine with absolute dedication.
Being the only resort of treatment for the people, the Vaidyars of Kerala were challenged to interpret the theories of Ayurveda and adapt them actively into effective healing systems in everyday life. Thus almost all the contemporary procedures and protocols of Ayurveda have evolved in and around Kerala.

PERFORMING ART FORMS

The Indian state of Kerala is well known for its diverse forms of performing arts. The various communities in Kerala contribute to its rich and colorful culture. Kathak, Kathakali are some of the very famous art forms of Kerala.

KALARIPPAYATTU

Kalaripayattu  is an Indian martial art. One of the oldest fighting systems in existence it is now practiced in Kerala, in contiguous parts of Tamil Nadu and among the Malayali community of Malaysia. It was originally practiced in northern and central parts of Kerala and the Tulunadu region of Karnataka.Kalaripayattu includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and healing methods
FESTIVALS

Festivals are true celebrations in God's Own Country; occasions when grandeur prevails over the characteristic simplicity of the Kerala lifestyle. Be it the state festival of Onam or the one at a local place of worship, new attire and sumptuous feasts are a must for the celebrations.
Besides being occasions for merry-making, festivals of Kerala have traditionally been preservers of the art and culture of this land. Whether religious or social, traditional or modern, a festival here is never complete without an art event which would range from the 2000-year-old Kutiyattam to contemporary stage shows.

MONSOON

The Monsoons in Kerala do not take the pattern of incessant rains continuing for weeks. Virtually it rains for a few hours with sunny interludes. Occasionally the rains might stretch on for a few days but the respite of sunshine is never far away. People look forward to seeing the sun peep through the wet palm fronds and rain drenched green. These golden interludes provide an equilibrium to life's natural flow.
Kerala has mainly two rainy seasons. The Southwest Monsoon that arrives in the month of June is called Edavappathy, as it comes in the middle of the month of Edavam on the Malayalam Calendar.

You must know the fact that Kerala is known as the “God’s Own Country” and even considered as the heaven on the planet due to its magnificent beauty. You can find a plethora of tourist places in Kerala including sandy seashores, wildlife parks and sanctuaries, sounding waterfalls, great lakes, ancient heritage sites and a lot more. In truly words, Kerala has a long chain of beautiful sights and places as well that let you capture the outstanding beauty of nature and exotic wildlife at a stone’s throw.
In brief Lush Green forests, Breathtaking Hills, Lakes and Valleys, Gygantic Elephants, Dedicated Ayurvedic Treatments, Beautifully made House Boats, Gorgeous Water falls, Natual Palm fringed beaches, Tasty Cuisine, Wild life, Bird Sanctuaries, Rich Culture all together makes Kerala a tropical PARADISE.

THE BEKAL FORT

Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala, situated at Kasaragod district, North Kerala. spreading over 40 acres.

Some important features of this fort are
  1. The water-tank with its flight of steps
  2. The tunnel opening towards the south
  3. The magazine for keeping ammunition
  4. The broad steps leading to the Observation Tower, which is a rarity. From there one has an ample view of towns in the vicinity
Unlike most other Indian forts, Bekal Fort was not a center of administration. Arguably the fort was built especially for fulfilling defense requirements. The holes on the outer walls of the fort are specially designed to defend the fort effectively. The holes at top were meant for aiming at the farthest points; the holes below for striking when the enemy was nearer and the holes underneath facilitated attacking when the enemy was very near to the fort. This is remarkable evidence of technology in defense strategy.

In 1992 the Government of India declared Bekal Fort as a special tourism area. In the year 1995 the government formed Bekal Tourism Development Corporation for transforming Bekal Fort into international tourism centre.Tourism promotion activities have been taking place of late in the areas surrounding the fort, under the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC). One song 'Uyire' (Tamil)  from the movie 'Bombay' directed by Mani Ratnam has been shot at Bekal Fort. Many such films, music albums, commercial advertisements etc., are being shot at Bekal Fort.

At the Bekal For:

Anjaneya Temple

The temple at the entrance of the fort is dedicated to Sree Hanuman. Said to be as old as the fort itself, the shrine was recently renovated and attracts hundreds of devotees from far and near.

Observation Tower:

Situated in the middle of the fort, the observation tower is the most visible landmark in the area. The structure, around 80 ft. in circumference at the base and more than 30 ft. high, commands a magnificent view of the sea to the south, north and west, and the green landscape to the east. The observation tower was a vantage point in the effective defines of the fort.

The Sea Bastion:

Located on the rocky outcrop west of the fort, the bastion is a unique structure, which offers a breathtaking view of the sea and beach. Having undergone extensive restoration, it is now a favourite spot with tourists.

Underground Passages

It is believed that there were many underground passages leading outside from various parts of the fort. Two of them are still intact, one leading to the southern face of the fort and the other to the moat on the east.

Seaside Pathway

The seafront of the fort is best viewed along the pathway, linking the beaches at the north and south of the battlement. The pathway is a magnificent walk, with the imposing facade of the fort wall to the east and the shimmering sea to the west. En route are cosy grottos that serve as ideal picnic spots. The seaside pathway has been developed by Bekal Resorts Development Corporation to enhance the Bekal experience.

The Magazine

The ancient magazine used to store weapons and ammunition is presently closed to the public and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.

2) Kanhangad/Hosdurg Fort: Another glorious testimony to the eventful history of Kasaragod. A chain of forts can be explored here.

3) Chandragiri Fort: 17th Century Fort situated on the Chandragiri River, southeast of Kasaragod town. The fort commands a breathtaking view of the river and the Arabian Sea and is an ideal place to watch the sun set.

THEYYAM KERALA DANCE FORM - KUMAAR HOLIDAYS

THEYYAM - THE KERALA DANCE FORM

Kerala is home to a number of dance and artforms. Several dance forms which originated in Kerala are today popular worldwide especially the Kathakali dance form and The Thiyyam Dance Form. Given below is a list of some of the most popular dance forms in Kerala.

Theyyam Kerala Dance Form
Kathakali Dance of Kerala
Thullal
Koodiyattam Dance Form
Duffmuttu or Aravanmuttu
Oppana Dance
Kaikottikali or Thiruvathirakali

Margamkali of Kerala
Thitambu Nritham

This blog is entirely dedicated to explain about The Theyyam Dance form of Kerala, the God's Own Country.

Theyyam other wise known as Kaliyattam or Thirayattam, is one of the most outstanding folk arts of Kerala. Just as the name Kaliyattam indicates, it is a sacred ritual dance performed to glorify the goddess Kaali. The term 'Theyyam' is supposed to be the corrupt form of the Malayalam word 'Daivam', meaning God. According to legends, Parasuram, the creator of Kerala, sanctioned the festival Kaliyattam to the people of Kerala. It earned the name Thirayattam as every thira or village performed this ritualistic art at the village temple known as kaavu.
Theyyam is a popular ritual dance form of North Kerala, particularly in Kannur and Kasargod districts. The Theyyam represents a mythological, divine or heroic character. Theyyam is always performed by men. They also enact female roles wearing exotic make up and colorful costumes. There are over 350 Theyyams performed in northern Kerala, of which Raktha Chamundi, Kari Chamundi, Muchilottu Bhagavathi, Wayanadu Kulaveni, Gulikan and Pottan are the most spectacular. Unlike other dance forms of Kerala which are onstage performances, Theyyam is performed in front of village temples, without stage or curtains.

Theyyam Costume and Make-up

Costume of the Theyyam is what lends flamboyance to this spectacular dance form. Different costumes like leaf dress, headdress, breast plates, arm ornaments, bangles, garland and other body decorations are to be prepared by the artists for performance. Some of the costumes are made up of tender coconut leaves and they are used only for single performance. Preparation of these items requires proper skill and craftsmanship.
Make up of Theyyams is done by specialist. There are different types of face painting for which primarily and secondary colours are used. Therefore it is essential that the makeup man should have perfect knowledge of primary and secondary colour combinations. Sometimes, it takes hours to paint the faces as per the strict rules of tradition.

Theyyam Performance

First part of the performance is usually known as 'Thottam' (the invocation). It is performed at night without proper make up or decorative costume. Only a small red head dress is worn on this occasion. The second stage is the performance of various ceremonies before the actual manifestation. The last is the most serious and important part of the Theyyam. It is the actual manifestation of the divine spirit. Here the dancer reappears in proper make up and costumes. As mentioned earlier, the Theyyam represents a mythological or divine character. The spirit of that Theyyam migrates into the artist who has assumed that spirit and it is a belief that the god or goddess comes in the midst of the gathering through the medium of the possessed dancer. The dancer throws rice on the audience and distributes turmeric powder as symbols of blessings. It is believed that the Theyyam has curative powers.
Karivalloor, Nileswaram, Kurumathoor, Parassini, Cherukunnu, Ezhom and Kunnathoorpadi in north Kerala are places where Theyyam is performed annually from October to May.
